You know, our story really begins in the heart of Las Vegas itself. Back in the 1970s, the casinos downtown and along the Strip weren't just about gambling. Almost every casino had a little lounge tucked inside, with live bands playing and dance floors where people could let loose. By the 1980s, Country Western dance halls started popping up, luring visitors with free drinks, live music, and those big, open dance floors. It was the spirit of the city—music, movement, and community.
When the 1990s rolled around, things shifted. The big dance halls gave way to upscale clubs with DJs, flashing disco lights, and thumping music. Meanwhile, Las Vegas itself was growing fast—our population ballooned from about 300,000 to half a million. Among all those new faces were people just like us, looking for a place to connect, relax, and dance. That's when a small group of our founding members decided to carve out their own space, bringing something different to the scene.
Thanks to our neighbors in California, West Coast Swing began sneaking into Vegas, capturing people's hearts. Classes and instructors started to appear, but there was only one regular place to actually dance each week. For many of us, that just wasn't enough. A few determined dancers took matters into their own hands and created another night dedicated to West Coast Swing.
And so, in the spring of 2016, Michelle Dwyer and a few friends launched what we came to call "Famous Tuesday." It started in a local restaurant, nothing fancy—just a small dance floor and volunteers who played the music while the restaurant graciously let us take over. It was scrappy, grassroots, and full of joy. When the restaurant closed in 2017, we didn't give up. We moved into a studio and "Famous Friday" was born. That's when things really started to grow. Volunteers stepped up to welcome dancers at the door, line up instructors, and make sure the music never stopped.
Of course, the journey wasn't always smooth. In 2020, we outgrew our space and shifted temporarily to another dance studio. The following spring, when that building was sold, we picked ourselves up again and moved into the ballroom of a larger Dance Center. The energy there was electric—our numbers grew, and so did the community.
By 2023, both our club and the Dance Center had become too big for the space we shared. So, together, we made another move—to Rainbow Blvd, right in the heart of the southwest side of Las Vegas. Today, we dance in a beautiful new facility with all the space and amenities we could hope for, and our Famous Friday tradition is stronger than ever.
So if you love West Coast Swing—or if you just want to see what makes this community so special—come dance with us. Our doors, our dance floor, and our hearts are open.
